Your questions, answered.
Yes, our power distribution units are engineered specifically for the demands of professional AV systems. They are built with robust components and appropriately rated circuit breakers to manage the high inrush currents typical of power amplifiers and digital signal processors during startup. This ensures reliable operation and helps prevent nuisance tripping that can occur with standard consumer-grade power strips.
While our basic PDUs cannot be field-upgraded internally, they serve as a reliable power foundation for a larger system. To add sequencing or network control, you would typically power the PDU from a dedicated LynTec power control product like an RPC panel or an NPAC sequencer. This modular approach allows you to start with simple distribution and scale up to intelligent control as system needs evolve.
The choice depends on the total power draw of your equipment and the circuit you are connecting to. A 15A PDU, like the JG 11-15A, is suitable for standard racks with lower-power equipment and connects to a common NEMA 5-15R wall outlet.
For racks with higher-density gear or power-hungry amplifiers, a 20A PDU like the JG 11-20A is required. Before specifying a 20A unit, ensure your facility has a corresponding 20A circuit with a NEMA 5-20R receptacle to support the higher load.
Selecting the correct wire gauge is critical for safety and performance. The gauge must be sufficient to handle the amperage of the circuit and the power draw of the connected equipment without overheating or causing significant voltage drop, especially over longer distances.
LynTec cables are specified to match the ratings of our power control products. For assistance in selecting the appropriate cable for a specific load or application, our engineering team can provide guidance to ensure a safe, code-compliant installation.
Our power distribution units are designed with practical features to make installations faster and cleaner. Rear outlets are rotated 90 degrees, allowing you to plug in bulky ‘wall wart’ power supplies without blocking adjacent outlets.
We also include extra-long 15-foot power cords on models like the JG 11-15A. This provides greater flexibility in rack placement and often eliminates the need for extension cords to reach distant wall receptacles, resulting in a safer and more professional installation.
Our PDUs provide an essential layer of protection for sensitive electronics. They include an internal metal oxide varistor (MOV) for basic surge and voltage spike suppression to guard against common power anomalies. Additionally, they feature AC line noise filtration, which helps reduce interference on the power line for cleaner, more stable power to your connected AV and IT equipment.
A basic power distribution unit (PDU) is the ideal foundation for providing clean, protected power to a single rack where only manual on/off control is needed. They are a simple and reliable starting point for any installation.
Choose a networked power controller or sequencer when you need to manage system startup/shutdown order, control individual outlets remotely, or integrate power management with a third-party control system like Crestron, Q-SYS, or AMX.
